A 42-year-old waiter named Greg Rubar at D’Amico’s Italian
Market Café received an enormous amount of tip from a couple who kept their
identity unknown.
Rubar has been serving the restaurant for 16 years. His car was flooded during a thunderstorm
several weeks ago and he’s been taking on taxis or borrowing the catering truck
of the restaurant from the owner.
A couple who have been coming to the restaurant for almost 8
years surprised Greg with an envelope of cash to solve his problem about his
car. The envelope contains 50 $100
bills.
“He said, I’m not going to be giving you a tip for a
while. Take this money. Go buy yourself a car,” Rubar told the
Houston Chronicle.
“Nobody ever gives me anything,” said Rubar. “They just wanted to help me out. They’re nice people.”
Rubar hesitated to accept the money and attempted to give it
back but to the couple but “they wouldn’t hear of it.”
The money that Rubar received is technically not a tip but a
gift because it was not attached to a bill.
"We have customers who care about us and have a relationship
beyond 'May I take your order please?', " said Nash D’Amico owner of
the restaurant.
“The next time I see them I want to offer to pay it back. To me, it would be more of a gift if it was a
loan,” Rubar said.
